LIVING VOICES

As I wasn’t able to go in class and Toom Boom didn’t work I worked with Life2D to animate with it’s puppetry rigs

source: Live2D

I did all my art on Procreate which I found really useful for when I couldn’t come out of bed.

Living voices Animatic

The animatic I made with procreate with the animatic I wanted to make something I can imagine as something I would do as a child a what would to want to be but I would get confused and do the opposite. That’s why I find it so charming as a voice line to work with.

With the background I went with a simple stage with a stage light on Shortzzy

Style research

My style research got changed as Toon Boom was not working on my PC the one below is the old one

New one Working from Live2D

Rigging the model took me awhile as I was very new to Live2D learning it took time and I learned how to do it by watching tutorials by Inkugaki VT which was very helpful

final version

I loved working on this project from home, especially since I’ve been under the weather lately. The best part for me was creating something complex and unique for the viewer. Unfortunately, since I didn’t have access to toon boom harmony, I had to make do without an X sheet. But I did my best, and I’m happy with how everything turned out in the end!

I’m a little disappointed that my chroma key didn’t work when I tried editing the animation. The animation file turned everything black and made it disappear.

Hidden places

For the past few weeks, I have been producing a 30-60 second animated film based on a location of my choice. My project started with Waterloo Station; I tried my best to take many pictures and videos when I was physically able.

While feeling ill, I brainstormed various concepts for my short film, experimented with multiple software like Live2D, and tried sound recording.

I found it helpful to use live-action footage for the hidden places to try out alternative approaches to storytelling, from using different camera angles and perspectives to experimenting with unusual pacing, like slow motion and time-lapse video.

I also experimented with editing techniques to get a unique look and thought of a narrative of what happened to me after that day.

The journey starts exploring Waterloo Station, and then the middle may seem like a train ride.

Still, I view it as a time of absence and the walls that I felt were closing on to me slowly opening to see the light of day where I thought I wouldn’t see it again, so for my ending, I deliberately picked a place that held personal meaning to me for my ending, which was the ending I was in West London on the day I finally was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and had a special Boba tea to celebrate.

But the ending to me shows the bushes’ and obstacles that was there can always can be seen different the more we move back.

I enjoyed pushing conventional narrative boundaries and have especially relished the challenge of developing a story close to me.

Out of your head

Reflecting on my collaboration.

What I experienced when working with Amelie and Nana has taught me I need.

To speak up.

Especially if I don’t feel like something is going to work.

We really struggled with communication and I tried to stick with speaking, but then everyone has their own life and I didn’t want to feel like I’m just pushing everyone to do the work or anything like that.

There was a time when I felt I personally was being forced to do things because someone can’t be bothered. I went through so much stress from one person I find it hard to express myself because of my dyslexia and it was really hard for me to speak up.

I tried to express my ideas, but each time it was stamped down by one member who can’t compromise so it was quite hard to say it in a clear way without feeling that I was annoying the person.

I also just need to stand my ground if I feel like something I think would work well is the main thing.

I myself did the editing of the animation the foley, the live-action paper animation I also did sound effects and was previously a background artist.

Reflecting on my progress

I think the starting process of doing our work was quite disorganised because on the last day before the holidays started Nana did not attend class or read any of our messages. So Amelie and I had to pick the words as she was not there and I made the mood board while Amelie made a small storyboard.

Over the holidays, communication was very poor because we all went up to go to our families. Even though I do admit I should have done more to ask how we could carry on the work.

Christmas Abby

After the holidays, it was just two weeks to do all of doing the work and having someone who didn’t look at the things that Amelie and I did before the holidays made there be a whole reshuffle as they did not want to compromise on their ideas like we did for them.

Amelie made the amazing storyboards

The first job was to make Nana a body view of the tortoise and find a tortoise pattern reference so she could 3D model and print it.

I made 3 versions of the tortoise first.

I was told by Nana to mix the second (middle) version body with the third (bottom) eyes so I did.

I had sourced the reference for Nana of the pattern of what a tortoise should look like and I had a go of drawing it so she can make a texture.

The reference I sourced was from Dreamstime.com

My Instagram post to the group to show the progress of drawing the pattern.

I was tasked to make the backgrounds by Nana.

Because when I said that I could make the audio/ soundtrack as I had my sound equipment but she insisted that she was going to it while she was making rigged 3d Tortoise, several 3D printed Tortoises I was worried about the workload on Them but I didn’t ask again as They were very adamant.

So wanting to be productive I asked what should I do next.

I stated that I wasn’t really good at making backgrounds but would try.

The background was a bit difficult because I was told to do the backgrounds but not without knowing software or if it’s 2D or 3D, so just basting it off of that I had to just be inventive.

I know it would have been better if I had just asked, but I was tasked to do something where I had no experience with, which obviously I need to develop my skills, but it was way difficult when each time I did ask to do something else or if there was something else someone didn’t want to do or shut down by a member.

Because they wanted to do it and I didn’t want to. I didn’t want to make it be hard for her or make it seem like I’m being this difficult.

So I just stuck with the backgrounds.

I would say that I was super fast to work as soon as I got it.

Reflecting on your concept.

My original background is where I try to set it in where the natural habitat of where tortoise lives in tortoise type. It was the African spurred tortoise.

Originally I made it in 2D in Photoshop.

I made sure it was muddy, it had dry grass, tall grass and he can feel the warmth of the savanna.

But Nana wanted it to be Beachy and I already made a few background scenes.

Being told without notice Nana wanted it a beach when tortoises don’t live on beaches was a bit frustrating. But I comprised as I didn’t want to be annoying or drag the team down so I said I’ll do it.

I thought if the beach was rocky you would need to make sure all the rocks each time we were in the right location when switching camera angles or switching points of view, which was not the best option due to time.

I tried to base the background on a few pictures that were given to me.

The first beach background

Amelie was quite happy with the colours I picked because it made the image the colour style picked looked more abstract and with different styles that will be coming in. I wanted to do the sky again because I thought I was too bright.

The second background

I did make a bluer sky but I thought I looked really boring.

This was the edited version of the first one (With help from Amelie) I did and I showed the group it. With help Amelie who had looked at the post said that the colours complement well with each other so I began working on the different background views as we were short on time.

This was the background I made for the Man looking at his hands:

Example of the background in practice Drawing from Amelie’s storyboard

I was going to use the palm tree I made in the 3D world’s project to have in the background to make there be

Example of the trees in the background

Nana said after I had finished 2/3 of the backgrounds that could use some detail in the backgrounds like rocks and it could natural in colour but I had already finished it and did show the progress of making the backgrounds so it was frustrating.

I explained that I kept it simple so it would be easier to animate and that’s why I blended parts rather than putting in rocks I said I could do it on blender.

They didn’t understand what I said and thought it was a 3D environment or render I explained to her that it was a drawing as I didn’t know if I should do 2D or 3D.

I did not put in the rocks because it’ll be too complicated when it came to switching angles, because if a character was walking, for example, “if the character was walking and the camera is moving with that with The Walking person the rocks would impact it if it was a continuous background

You’re going to see the loop of that rock, and then there will be a continuity error.

I did not want that to happen, so I kept the sand because the matter where you go the sand will always be different.

So I kept it to them and then my work was scraped by Nana one with no way for my work to fit in as it was completely different I question them on this and I was told that my background could be used for Amelie part of the animation.

As they revealed that they couldn’t 3D print the tortoise as they were fixing the printer for it so it was scraped as well which did confuse Amelie and me but I couldn’t make the background animation again in time as it was late notice (a day before the presentation).

I said to Amelie not to use my backgrounds it will be confusing to the viewer as Nana was now saying mixed media would be quite cool if we could do it in time completely disregarding the time and work I already put in as they replaced my work.

I then said to Nana to start making the sounds for the animation even if it doesn’t match or I’ll do it. My words came across as harsh as I did not explain what I meant properly as they said I say that like its a threat which was not my intention then told me to do the tortoise sounds/movement as they will do the ambience and the background music.

I edited what I had at the moment while I was reminded to take a screenshot of everything you do in software for the pdf and upload it to the drive made by them.

I encouraged everyone we got this and worked all night on the work. (even though I was told by doctors to rest)

But it wasn’t enough to edit Nana gave me the 2-second animation and music and sourced beach ambience and Amelie animatic weren’t handed to me on time so I edited this together while making sound effects.

After the presentation, I told our group the feedback that our work received as I was the only one there.

Amelie gave the animation and asked who animated the middle which was a good question as I was thinking to as my backgrounds was meant to be used throut the animation so all that needed to be done is animate put a green screen I’ll edit it on.

But I was delegated to do the animation by Nana they were busy with work to do the middle part of the animation a day before the deadline (27th) when I was asleep I had to explain that I didn’t think I could do it as I did my animations before my but it replaced with Nana’s work then I had to edit everything together go to the doctors (as my health is completely messed up) and catch up with rotations.

I said I didn’t know what was going to happen It was completely impossible and looking at the storyboard but even though I had no strength in me I said You know what I don’t care I’ll try something but I don’t want to hear no complaints I’m literally running on zero strength to the chat.

Amelie engcoraged the group and I went to it I edited the whole animation and did foley and did the live-action to paper animation through all nighter.

Though I had to cut corners.

Squiggly lines is I did but not include which was the man

Audio

Headphone warning!!!!

Paper and hand green screens

I really enjoyed making the blooded hand with alcohol markers and flour.

But as soon as I posted the finished the onedrive was locked with all my work and Amelie’s too.

Nana left the group chat and did not reply to my messages leaving me stressed out, panicky and shaken.

Reflecting on your overall experience.

I would say this experience with my group project has taught me that I need to stop being quiet and when I don’t feel comfortable in situations and not being a doormat for people that are unwilling to comprise.

I also learnt that when you are feeling really stressed out it can make you do things out of despration.

Skills Improved after this project:

Adobe Premiere Pro has been refined in chromakey.

Blender- Camera placement transitions, Texurue and animations in backgrounds

Photoshop- Blending colours for backgrounds and Blurring to make the image softer

Audaity- Making sound effects and foley

Skills that need Improving after this project:

Communication

Explaining

Having a backbone

In conclusion I think you need to say to someone who make you feel like you are incompetent that you simply won’t do it and you should take note of someone’s actions towards you before you feel like you are worthless.

That’s all I have to say, thank you for reading.

Introduction to Animation – WK4 – 21st Oct 2021

For artist research, my group and I went to Tate Britain and we looked at an artist called Henry Moore and we were all inspired to make something of his artwork so we all made clay sculptures stop motion I, unfortunately, can’t show the youtube link doesn’t work anymore.

WEEK 5 & 6 – Oct 28th/Nov 4th

Was unwell

Week 7 – Nov 11th

I was tasked to make a story with a team to make an artist Book I had to work with a group and we had to finish the project within a day.

I suggested the idea of using Shadows to make our artist book and using my idea with using Shadows to make a shadow puppet book we made a shadowy book we can bind all our art Styles into something where it’s easier for us all of us to relate to draw and cut.

We went with a circus idea we developed the idea of the elephant was a magical elephant with wings London Circus in only this elephant.

But the Dragon of Coventry Circus decided to assassinate The Elephant so more customers can go to their circus instead. The elephant fought the Dragon, unfortunately, lost so elephant was turned to dust and a baby used phones from the skeleton to make a castle and from that day it was known as elephant Castle with the elephant watching ahead of everyone.

Write 5 short sentences

I can’t believe that he’s gone.

He’s mean to leave me behind.

What if I stayed with him before he left?

I should just die because I’m lost without him.

He was the best friend I ever had.

This was based on the five stages of grief.

Sound

I was unwell but I attended the virtual lessons as I was at home had to be very inventive with the sounds I made for my animations I would open my windows to record sounds of cars and traffic from the road I would use my vacuum to try to get recordings of the noise I had used youtube videos in order to obtain crowd noise I also recorded myself tapping the glass with different objects. I also used music I made for a game for the animation and I really enjoyed making the foley for my animation.

I used Blender and Aseprite my 3d worlds model of Abby, I tried to make it seem like we are watching her do her everyday randomness.

With Aseprite I made a fake video game character talking and disappearing.

Sound has the be one of those things that you hear all the time but you do think how can I stimulate sound for different scenarios like someone being slapped instead of a slap replace it with a drum.
It technically gives the same effect.

Doing the animation for the sounds was really fun as I filmed everything inside but it feels well made as if it’s outside.

Photographics

Project BriefIn this rotation and project, students will design and digitally composite an abstract composition using Adobe Photoshop. By following the guidance and principles of 2-dimensional design, students will craft a dynamic composition using point, line, shape, texture and colour to their advantage. Furthermore, students will write a brief analysis about their final composition, addressing their conceptprocess and outcome.

The main 3 are

I used this as there is a lot of negative space, I could work with it more and the positive space that is there is so bold.
I chose this picture as the bars showed repetition in their shape and its tonal contrast is black it will make the viewer see the bars first.
Loved the asymmetrical building tops that I used this also.

I wanted to make my work be abstract so I changed the horizon points and filled the negative space from the Elephant and Castle with a repetitive shape and I used the asymmetrical buildings to be under the same negative space.

Sketching and Drawing

I was unwell I drew environments when I was on the but some at home I drew some at LCC

I drew more at home showing the bleakness of stress and it makes your environments be filled with disorganization and filled with

A person stood where I was drawing and I asked I could draw her in she was quite happy to let me.

Traditional animation

Traditional animation was my favourite rotation as I get to work with paper and pencil just like my animator hero James Baxter.

I was given 3 mini briefs :

1. Straight Ahead and Pose to Pose

2. Timing and Spacing

3. Ease out and in

(with pdf brief attached)

I picked the ease in and out and then I began sketching the idea of Abby in a debate who is in a debate becoming sleepy then is woken up which surprises her and then makes her feel annoyed.

Workshop briefs:
1) – Debating Character
In order to familiarise yourself with the animation chart and how to ease out and into a
keyframe, use the following animation chart to work out your in-betweens for a pose to pose
animation. Design a simple character with three separate hand gestures which will be your
keyframes 1-30, 42-71 and 83-112. The keyframes cover 30 frames because they will be
shot under the line tester 30 times so the character pauses at the end of each pose.

From my feedback, I was told that io went over the brief and thought it was good if it was in the industry it could cause problems which I do understand but as I was unaware that the brief told a different story to what I thought was written and I do take responsibility for that.

Motion graphics

I was unwell but I made a small animation of glowing circles.

First I made a circle
Then I used 4 point gradient
I duplicated the circle made it black
Shrunk it down to let the underlayer show
then I put a blur on the black circle
for the highlights I made a circle and used a gradient effect on the circle and
I had a mask layer to see the highlight under
I then resized the highlight layer then put it on the cloured circle.
I duplicated the highlight and mask layer changed the position of the new highlight layer and I changed the position of this new highlight layer and colour
the next thing I did was to make a background colour so I made one
I brought everything onto the same layer as the background
I went into the code of the ring and made there be, for the rotation I put in time*20 to make there be a constant rotation and I also put code on the position for it to wiggle (.5,55) this makes the circle not be sitting at the same spot and gives more life to it
I put in a glow effect on the ring and I put in a noise effect to make sure there is no residue of the glow making there be weird lines in the background
I duplicated more rings and changed the locations
The final with different variations and different hues

Sketches

This is version one of my ideas I was thinking of a beach with a cute little cabin but I didn’t go with this idea because I thought it would take too much time to make everything.
The second version was more Christmas themed (I don’t know why) and I drew my character, Abby, I made in character design last week so I wanted to incorporate both in my scene somehow.
The third version is both ideas combined to create one collage of a sandy beach with a lovely sunset.

Version 1

For my first version I chose to go with a warm beachy vibe, and it worked well.

Version 2

So, for the second version I tried to do a cooler tone in the background that has a more purple tone to it.

Version 3

For the third version, I tried to make it be the sunset is hazier and give the sun more deep orange, while the background is more of a dark purple and it makes the light look more real, it has all the going to the sun.

Version 4

For the 4th version, I put a film grain as an overlay for the beach background I do not really think it worked well.

Version 5

For the fifth one, I just went a bit crazy with it, and I just made everything super bright, which was a bit stupid because it is kind of it makes your eyes hurt. It is there is a bit of eyestrain to the colours, so it was not really my best attempt.
